Alongside groups such as A Tribe Called Quest and The Roots, Rock merged elements of jazz into hip-hop. In the 1990s, he gained mainstream success in the group Pete Rock and CL Smooth, with two of their studio albums charting on the Billboard Top R&B Albums.
